TiVo Inc introduced its own brand of digital video recorders at the consumer electronics show in January of 1999 and sold its first unit to the public in March. Since then the word TiVo has become synonymous with the word 'record', much in the same way that 'to xerox' became an alternative 'to photocopy'. An example of this phenomenon would be the sentence "I am going to TiVo that show next week".
